Why do I need veneers?

An improvement in cosmetic appearance is the main reason people get dental veneers. They provide a smooth, evenly-coloured surface for your teeth if you have discoloured, chipped, cracked, or uneven teeth.

Sometimes, people might need dental veneers to improve the strength of their enamel or to improve the position of existing teeth.

What are the types of dental veneers?

Our Mooroolbark dental team apply either porcelain or composite veneers.

Porcelain veneers

We create a thin porcelain sheet to fit over the front of the tooth. The customised porcelain layer allows you to achieve a personalised appearance. We attach the strong porcelain layer to your teeth using special cement to keep it in place.

Composite veneers

Also known as resin or bonded veneers, we apply a resin material to your tooth, colour-matched to your tooth colour. The resin bonds to your teeth, and fills in gaps on chipped or uneven teeth. The result is a smooth finish with an even colour.

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

In addition to improving the appearance of your teeth, dental veneers:

  • Are low-maintenance
  • Last a long time
  • Show a natural look and feel
  • Prevent ongoing tooth discolouration
  • Cover chips, cracks and existing discolouration.

FAQs About Dental Veneers

Do veneers get cavities?

No. Porcelain and composite veneers can’t get cavities, though the teeth underneath them can still get them.

So it’s essential to maintain your oral health routine after you’ve had veneers placed onto your teeth. With dental veneers, you still need to use mouthwash and brush twice a day.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers last about 15-20 years. Composite veneers have a timeframe of between 5-8 years.

Can I drink coffee and alcohol with veneers?

Yes, you can. Veneers (especially porcelain ones) will keep their colour over time.

Can I eat with dental veneers?

Once affixed to the teeth, your veneers will be very strong. You will be able to eat all the foods you’re used to.

Can dental veneers be whitened?

We don’t recommend using a whitening treatment on veneers. Our teeth whitening products whiten natural teeth, but not porcelain or composite resin veneers.

If you use whitening products on veneers, your smile will likely have uneven tones.

Can I have a filling instead of a veneer?

While we use tooth-coloured compounds for fillings, in some instances the damage to the tooth may be too significant to repair with a filling.

In such cases, we will repair the affected area, then cover with a dental veneer.

Do dental veneers damage your teeth?

As long as you take care of your veneers, your natural teeth won’t become damaged. Of course, you’ll also need to look after your dental hygiene to keep your teeth in top condition.

How much do dental veneers cost?

As a rule, composite veneers are more affordable than porcelain veneers. Speak with our knowledgeable front desk team about payment options we can personalise just for you.
