FAQs About Teeth Whitening

Can I eat and drink anything during the whitening process?

We recommend you avoid any foods and drinks that would stain a white shirt for the duration of the bleaching process and the following 48 hours. At your appointment, we will provide you with a comprehensive list.

Is there any pain associated with home bleaching?

There should be next to no pain during home whitening. Your teeth will likely be sensitive for the duration of whitening and 1-2 days following cessation. Once you have stopped whitening your teeth they will return to normal within 48 hours.

How long do I need to whiten at home?

You wear your bleaching trays for approximately 30-45 minutes each day. We recommend a treatment time of 5-14 days depending on how white your teeth are getting.

Don’t forget to brush your teeth after each session of wearing the Pola whitening trays.

When will I start seeing results?

Studies show that most people see whiter teeth after 3 nights of using whitening at home.  However, some patients can take longer to whiten.

How long does teeth whitening last?

The length of time teeth whitening lasts varies from patient to patient, depending on how often they eat or drink staining foods or drinks like beetroot or coffee, or if they smoke.

On average, however, patients can expect whitening to last between 6 months and 2 years.

Do I need to restrict my diet during the whitening process?

During the whitening timeframe, try to minimise the consumption of tea, coffee, red wine and beetroot, as these substances may re-stain the teeth during and after the whitening process.

You should also minimise or quit smoking during the process, as nicotine can stain teeth.

How much does Pola teeth whitening cost?

The cost of Pola teeth whitening is different for each patient, as each patient wants different levels of teeth whitening, which requires different strengths of the whitening gel.

Our friendly front-desk team can advise you of prices, and payment arrangements.

How do I care for my Pola whitening trays?

Taking care of your Pola whitening trays is easy. After your treatment, remove the tray. Simply rinse the tray – and your mouth – with lukewarm water.

How do I store my whitening gel and trays?

You can store any remaining gel in your refrigerator for future touch-ups. Do not freeze the gel.

To store your trays between use, rinse with cold water and use a toothbrush to remove any remaining gel. Allow the trays to dry then return them to their storage case. Do not place the trays in the dishwasher.

Will my teeth become sensitive when using whitening gel?

Some patients may experience an increase in sensitivity to cold during the whitening process, however this is often mild.  The symptoms should subside in 2 to 3 days after interrupting the treatment.  You can then try whitening every second or third night.

Can I use teeth whitening gel when pregnant?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we don’t recommend that you use any whitening products.  Contact your dentist if you have any questions.
