What is Invisalign?

Like all orthodontic treatments, Invisalign works gradually to move your teeth into a new alignment by using gentle pressure. You will wear a series of clear, removable plastic aligners customised expressly for your teeth.

The aligners are nearly invisible, so they are often a more attractive teeth-straightening solution compared to traditional metal braces.

Every 3-6 weeks, you will move to the next set of aligners made personally for you until your treatment time ends. Treatment time can range from as little as three months up to 24 months. The time varies depending on how much or how little your teeth need to move.

What orthodontic issues can Invisalign fix?

If you or your child has one or more of the following bite or alignment issues, you may have considered orthodontic treatment:

  • gap teeth
  • crowded teeth
  • open bite
  • overbite
  • crossbite
  • underbite.

Visiting our surgery to learn more about orthodontic treatment is a great first step. Our dentist may recommend invisible braces as a suitable orthodontic treatment to correct bite or alignment concerns for you or your child.

The Invisalign process

Initial appointment

We start all orthodontic treatments with a consultation with our experienced dentist to see if you are suitable for clear plastic aligners. Then, we’ll discuss your goals and examine your teeth.

Our dentist will use the hand-held iTero scanner over a 3-5 minute timeframe to create a series of 3D colour images of your teeth and mouth. From these images, our dentist will create your personalised treatment plan.

We’ll gather all the information from the scans, plus any X-ray images needed, and send the content to the Invisalign headquarters. Invisalign will also receive our recommendations and suggestions so that they can create your customised series of removable clear plastic braces.

Ongoing appointments

When we receive your entire series of clear plastic aligners, we’ll arrange a time for you to come in so we can fit them to your teeth.

Then, you’ll come in every 3-6 weeks or so to receive replacement aligners; this will happen until your Invisalign course is complete. So your entire treatment will take anywhere from 3-24 months, depending on the level of treatment needed.

At each appointment, our dentist will show you how your teeth have moved, bit by bit, until they reach their final, agreed and above all, straight position.

What happens now that I have my Invisalign clear braces?

Depending on the length of your treatment, you may use upwards of twenty sets of customised clear aligners. As such, you’ll need to come to our Mooroolbark dental clinic upwards of 20 times to receive your next set of aligners. At each visit, we will also check on your progress.

When you’re wearing Invisalign, remember to:

  • brush your teeth after every meal
  • remove your aligner when eating
  • wear your aligner for 22 hours every day.

Benefits of Invisalign

Save time

A course of clear plastic aligners can be significantly shorter than a course of traditional braces (metal braces or ceramic braces).

Nearly invisible

Because Invisalign clear aligners are nearly invisible, neither you nor those around you will notice you’re wearing them.

Comfort

You won’t even notice you’re wearing Invisalign. They fit perfectly to your teeth as each set is customised for you.

Smooth surface

The material’s surface is soft and smooth so that you won’t get ulcers or punctures across the gums or lips. People with traditional metal braces often experience this – but not people with Invisalign clear braces.

Removable

Your aligners are removable, so you’ll be able to eat, floss and brush your teeth conveniently, without compromising overall tooth or gum health.

They’re safe

The clear aligners are made from a safe thermoplastic material called SmartTrack, which contains no gluten, latex, BPA or BPS. As a result, people living with allergies to these compounds can use Invisalign confidently and safely.

Types of Invisalign clear aligners

We know that every patient has different teeth-straightening needs and goals, so we offer different Invsisalign treatment options at our Mooroolbark dental clinic. However, all options use the same trusted & safe BPA-free Invisalign thermoplastic material, and all options have the same purpose of straightening your teeth.

Invisalign Full

Patients receiving this option will have a complex orthodontic presentation. To achieve full results, patients need to commit between 12-24 months.

Invisalign Teen

This treatment option is for teenage patients, where some teeth may still be growing and changing alignment.

Invisalign Lite

This option may suit you if you’re a patient who only needs changes to the front six teeth. Designed to correct minor crowding conditions, expect desired results in six months or less.

Invisalign Express (Invisalign i7)

Patients who need only minor changes to bite or alignment within the six front teeth may be ideal candidates for this treatment, which only takes 3-6 months.

How much will Invisalign cost?

Because we customise Invisalign treatment for each patient, and because each patient has different levels of complexity needed to achieve straight teeth, there is no fixed price for orthodontics at our Mooroolbark dental surgery. Each patient will also need different timeframes to complete their course.

Our knowledgeable and friendly office staff will be able to provide you with everything you need to know about costs and private health insurance rebates.

FAQs About Invisalign

How much does Invisalign cost?

Because every patient coming to our Mooroolbark dental clinic will have different reasons for having Invisalign, there is no one set fee. Costs also depend on the length of treatment time and complexity of orthodontic work needed.

Please chat with our friendly office staff to learn more about costs and private health insurance rebates.

How often will I need to wear my Invisalign aligner?

To get the full benefits of your personalised invisible braces, we recommend you wear them for 22 hours a day. You may take them out when eating or cleaning them using the directions we provide you.

How do I clean and care for my Invisalign clear aligners?

You should rinse your clear aligner every night under running water.

Additionally, you should brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush every night, using a gentle liquid soap. Doing this helps to remove any food waste that may have accumulated over the day. Note: use a different toothbrush for this task (not the toothbrush you use to brush your teeth daily).

When you take your aligners out to eat food, please store them in the protective case provided for this purpose.

How long does Invisalign take?

Depending on what treatment option you choose and on the complexity of your case, your orthodontic course of clear aligners could take as little as three months or upwards of 24 months.

What does Invisalign do?

Invisalign clear aligners use small amounts of pressure gradually to change the alignment of teeth. The end goal of a treatment course is straight teeth.

What do Invisalign clear plastic braces look like?

An Invisalign orthodontic appliance is completely colourless and follows the line of your teeth. When fitted correctly, the aligners will be almost invisible to most people.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Patients wearing traditional metal or ceramic braces will feel some mild discomfort and pressure when the braces are adjusted. Patients with Invisalign experience the same mild discomfort each time they receive their new set of invisible braces.

However, because there are no wires or metal brackets, there is no chance of catching wires or brackets on the skin or gums, causing ulcers.

Can anyone have Invisalign clear plastic braces?

Invisalign isn’t for everyone. For example, patients with existing restorative work such as a bridge or rotating or vertical teeth movement are unsuitable candidates.

If you’re a patient who won’t be able to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day, the aligners won’t be for you.

We will advise alternative options for you in these cases.
