Definitions

What are bitewing X-rays?

Bitewing X-rays are also known as bite-wing X-rays and bite wing X-rays. These X-rays show details of the lower and upper teeth in a specific area of the mouth only, from the jawbone up to the tooth’s crown. The bite-wing X-ray can identify gum disease, which displays in the X-ray as decay between teeth and changes in bone thickness. When a dentist undertakes a bitewing X-ray on a patient, this involves the patient biting down on a piece of cardboard or plastic containing X-ray film or an X-ray sensor.

What are OPG X-rays?

OPG X-rays give the dentist a full view of the patient’s upper and lower jaws and all teeth. OPG stands for orthopantomagram. These scans help the dentist identify wisdom teeth development and abnormal jawbone growths. Dentists also use OPG X-rays to monitor developing teeth in children.

What are intraoral photographs?

Dentists use a high-quality digital camera to take intraoral photographs which show teeth, gums and oral tissue. Intraoral photographs allow dentists to create a baseline for all patients’ dental conditions. Dentists use these photographs to monitor whether the conditions are getting better or worse.
